Six Sixty SixDrum Synthesizer

A drum synth plugin for Linux, Windows and macOS, built from classic-inspired algorithms and stranger ideas. Twelve drum voices, a proper step sequencer, and plenty of ways to disturb the quiet. The thing that was waking up in the workshop is, it turns out, a drum machine. Nobody is more relieved than the robot.

What it does

The specifications we spent last issue redacting, now printed in full. Legal has been informed.

// Page A2

Twelve voices

  • Kick, snare, closed and open hat, three toms, clap, cowbell, clave, shaker and cymbal.
  • Each voice has its own pitch, decay, level and pan, plus tone and shape controls where they make sense.
  • Per-voice on/off and gate modes.

More cowbell is available. It is not the default.

// Page A3

Synthesis models

  • Several selectable models each for kick, snare, hi-hat and cymbal.
  • Classic-inspired pitch sweeps, FM, modal, waveguide, noise and resonator designs.
  • Inspired by the classics. Not cloned from them, and we will not pretend otherwise.

Stylized approximations, built by ear, checked by scope.

// Page A4

Step sequencer

  • Patterns, banks and song mode, with copy, paste, undo and redo.
  • Per-step probability and parameter locks.
  • Swing, flam, accent and humanize for when perfect timing gets boring.

Sixteen steps. Considerably more opinions.

// Page A5

Membrane

  • A shared resonant membrane every voice can excite through its own send.
  • Drive, character, pitch, decay and strike controls.
  • Ties the kit together, or shakes it apart.

Think of it as the room the drums live in, if the room were also a drum.

// Page A6

Sampler & comp

  • Load your own WAV files alongside the synthesized voices.
  • Optional bus compressor with threshold, ratio, attack, release, makeup and mix.

For when synthesis alone fails to express how you feel.

// Page A7

Skins & themes

  • Trace: fine-line vector panels with a glow. Holo: chunkier, CRT-style hardware.
  • Seven color themes for each, from phosphor amber to monochrome.
  • User-themeable design: when seven palettes are not enough, make your own.

The robot prefers amber. The robot does not get a vote.

Up close

All plates are unretouched captures of the running plugin. Cropping is the only editorializing.

Two skins

Same knobs, same sound, different wardrobe. Switch whenever the studio lighting changes or your mood does.

Synth page in the Trace skin, Hercules theme: thin glowing arcs and outlined panels.

Trace

Thin glowing arcs, outlined panels, a live scope line. Modern, quiet, easy on the eyes at 2 a.m.

Synth page in the Holo skin, Hercules theme: solid knobs and pixel lettering.

Holo

Solid knobs, pixel lettering, CRT bloom. For people who miss hardware that hummed.

Seven themes

Choose by mood, by studio lighting, or by which one makes the kick sound louder. (None of them do. It feels like they do.) The design is user-themeable, so an eighth is up to you.

Dear Robot,

The cowbell is too loud. Please also make it louder.
